Confidence through knowledge: Getting a job in this field can happen quickly but not without hard work. Basic skill level should include knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and JQuery. To be an even more valuable candidate, the knowledge of web design, user experience designing, Photoshop, Git/GitHub, cross-browser compatibility and responsive web design is a plus. Never stop learning even after you have obtained your dream position. Keeping up with technology is integral. The learning process is not intimidating since memorizing code is not the key: fully understanding concept is. Obtaining and keeping up with these technologies is not only rewarding but, more importantly, the knowledge grows confidence that will shine when interviewing.
Confidence through experiences: Joining meet-up groups and participating in open source projects and hackathons can take experience and confidence even further. Between the knowledge, experience, and contacts met through groups, opportunities will begin to open. The comfort level will now be there to do work for others. This work can be paid freelancing jobs and pro-Bono or charity work. It does not have to be building an entire website. Any work that is completed will be a fantastic addition to a required portfolio.
Employment preparation: Knowledge, confidence and portfolio is growing. Now is time to search job postings. It does not matter where the job is located or what company is posting at this point.
